Verkada Adds Auto-Leveling Capabilities to Cameras

Don’t sweat the small stuff. It has been great advice many times throughout my life—from relationships and finding work/life balance, to managing stress and maintaining a positive outlook.

But, by speaking with many of Verkada’s customers, my team and I have recognized that this old adage doesn’t fully apply to video cameras and enterprise surveillance. In certain cases, after an organization deploys their new system, small issues can persist and interfere with optimal performance.

At Verkada, we’re always looking for ways to make our cameras easier to install, deploy and maintain. In an effort to provide even better solutions to all of our users, we work continuously to overcome even minor issues. And we have recently made some significant advances in one key area.

The Problem: Crooked Images

One issue the team at Verkada has been working to resolve is the problem of crooked images.

First and foremost, users can best minimize this annoyance by mounting their cameras properly. Installing a camera on the wall completely level is always the optimal way to ensure the footage output will be as straight as possible.

Unfortunately, in the real world, this is not always easy. Even if the base plate is mounted level in 180-degree wall mode, there can be tiny shifts over time due to vibration if the mounting screws are not tightened completely. Some clients have told us that their cameras have been bumped slightly over time, which introduces small shifts to their viewing angle.

Our latest innovation is yet another way we’re simplifying installation, deployment and maintenance processes—regardless of whether that work is done by partners or customers.

Auto-Leveling Innovation

Currently, we are working to further improve straightening and introduce auto-leveling capabilities. This will simplify the process of getting a good framing by eliminating the need for manual micro-adjustments to the mounting of our D40 and D80 cameras.

We have designed the new solution to work by using an accelerometer, which incorporates the force of gravity and any other potential position-altering effects, to determine the physical orientation of the camera when it’s installed on a wall. The camera will be able to automatically rotate the image to compensate for whatever degree of rotation is necessary.

For our customers, the value is clear. While it once may have taken a few minutes to level each camera every time it’s installed, moved or redeployed, that process now takes no time at all. The impact to someone who is tasked with installing 500 cameras is significant. Additionally, many of our customers frequently move their cameras from one location to another to capture different locations or address specific needs. Auto-Leveling eliminates the added time that would be spent to adjust those cameras and enables IT teams to focus on other priorities.

As with all of Verkada’s advancements and new features, the goal of Auto-Leveling is simple: To make life easier for users by incorporating more intelligent functionality.
