Enhancing Patient Privacy and Security with New Guest for Healthcare Updates

Healthcare facilities can be high-stress environments. Staff must keep facilities safe while simultaneously welcoming everyone from anxious family members to equipment technicians — all while protecting patient privacy. Today, we are introducing new updates to Verkada Guest, designed to help healthcare teams manage visitor access with ease.

Tailored Workflows for a Complex Front Desk

Every person entering a healthcare facility has a unique reason for their visit, so a generic check-in process often fails to capture additional context. Organizations can now build distinct check-in workflows tailored to specific visitor types, ensuring all relevant information is captured before granting access. For example, a facility can configure streamlined workflows for minors that skip ID scanning and facial capture, while still requiring adult visitors to sign digital documents and complete health questionnaires at the kiosk.

Assisted Sign-In

Front desk staff also have more flexibility in welcoming visitors. First, they can add details and context to visitor profiles — for example, noting that someone is a chaplain, so the visit should not count toward a patient’s visitation limit. Second, staff can also enter some check-in details themselves, then push only the necessary steps, such as capturing a signature, to the iPad kiosk for the visitor to complete. These updates help keep healthcare facility lobbies moving quickly while still maintaining security for the patient population.

Advanced Security Features

While a seamless front desk experience is important, security teams still bear the responsibility of keeping unauthorized individuals out. To support this, healthcare organizations now have access to three new security features:

  • Identity Document Verification (IDV): Scans both the front and back of a government-issued ID to verify its authenticity.

  • Biometric IDV: Helps ensure the person standing at the desk matches their ID photo through a live facial capture for an added layer of security.

  • Face Match: Allows front desk personnel to instantly cross-reference visitors against internal deny lists using facial recognition.

Customizable Visitor Badges

Once a visitor departs the lobby, the responsibility for maintaining security transitions to floor staff, who must be able to verify at a glance whether an individual is authorized to be in their specific ward. To ensure visual identification is both immediate and reliable, Verkada Guest now offers highly customizable visitor badges.

Organizations can now tailor badge designs based on the specific department a guest is visiting or reformat layouts to emphasize critical details, such as the date. Furthermore, because Guest integrates directly with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, badges can automatically populate with vital context—including a patient’s department and room number—ensuring their visitors are guided to the right destination.
