Get Notified When Expected Activity Stops With New Inactivity Detection Alerts
Most alerts are designed to notify you when activity occurs: a person enters a restricted area, a vehicle crosses a line, or motion is detected after hours. But effective alerts shouldn’t just help you respond to what is happening - they should also help you identify when something isn’t happening, but should be.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce inactivity detection, a new alert type designed to help detect the absence of people or vehicles in a defined area for a set period of time.

This shift opens up powerful new use cases for both security and operations teams. Inactivity detection can help organizations identify issues that traditional motion- or event-based alerts might miss.
For example:
Ensure guard coverage stays uninterrupted: If a security post needs to be staffed at all times, you can receive an alert if a guard is not detected near a door or checkpoint for a specified period.
Identify operational and staffing issues faster: If a retail store is expected to remain staffed until 5 p.m., an alert can notify you if the space appears empty at 4:30 – potentially signaling an early closure or staffing issue.
Spot potential equipment downtime: In a manufacturing facility, teams may expect to see employees regularly moving around a machine or conveyor belt. If no activity is detected for a period of time, it could signal the equipment has stopped or a process has stalled, helping teams investigate and resolve issues sooner.
Inactivity detection alerts can be configured on certain camera regions, across multiple cameras, or even across an entire site. You can choose the duration of inactivity after which the alert triggers, and – just like our other alerts – you can set it on a schedule.
With inactivity detection, we’re expanding camera-based alerts beyond simply detecting events to now monitoring expected patterns and flagging when those patterns break. It is yet another example of how Verkada is helping organizations use video security for both proactive safety and operational awareness.
Inactivity detection will be available in all Command organizations on May 14, 2026.
