Verkada Gives’ charitable-giving strategy is fueled by our employees and the organizations they care about most. John Lierley and Rit Das – Verkada team members in Austin and Chicago – are two examples of how we have supported the American Cancer Society through their requests.
Save Lives, Forking Cancer in Austin
After learning about a family member's cancer diagnosis and after a teammate beat cancer the previous year, John Lierley decided to get involved with the American Cancer Society’s Fork Cancer annual event and golf tournament.
In 2021, Fork Cancer raised $160,000, with $75,000 of that funding going toward transportation grants for local cancer patients. The effort funded roughly 7,500 rides to Central Texans needing access to and from their lifesaving cancer treatments.
Verkada is happy to sponsor the event for the second time that brings together Austin’s unique food, beverage, and music scene. Fork Cancer is expected to raise $250,000 for the American Cancer Society, with $100,000 of that funding travel when it is required for care.
In 2022, Skyline Soiree raised $370,000, with $100,000 of that funding committed to Dr. Marc Mendillo’s research at Northwestern University. Verkada is proud to be a corporate sponsor for this event in honor of Rit and his mother
“Momma said that ‘Prevention is better than a cure!’ I still don't have answers about how this deadly disease found its grip on her in such a short time. However, I am hopeful that someday we will all find answers to the unknown, detect cancers early, prevent their spread, and move closer to living in a cancer-free world.” We're proud of John and Rit's work in their communities to bring awareness to cancer illnesses – thank you for all you do!
