Every day, employees visit buildings that aren't their own. A traveling technician checks in at a plant they don't normally work from. A nurse travels to a different facility for a shift. A district administrator walks into a school. These aren't visitors, they're employees – but most organizations have no good way to treat them like one upon check-in.
Verkada Guest was built to manage external visitors: contractors, vendors, interview candidates. As a result, organizations have been stuck with workarounds: signing employees in under generic guest types or relying on access control badge data alone, which doesn't give security and operations teams the visibility they need for occupancy tracking, compliance, or emergency accountability.
That's why we're excited to introduce employee check-in, a new way to identify, log, and manage visiting employees directly within Guest.
A Sign-In Experience Built for Employees, Not Just Visitors
At the center of this launch is the employee guest type, a new kind of guest type purpose-built for employees rather than external visitors. Admins configure an employee guest type by pointing it at an existing Command or access group, which becomes the source of truth for who counts as a visiting employee at that site.
Once configured, a visiting employee no longer has to fill out a generic guest form or invent a check-in workaround. Instead, they can identify themselves in one of two ways:
Scan their existing employee badge: Employees can check in by scanning their badge's barcode at a kiosk. Scanning automatically inputs their ID number into Guest.
Type their employee ID: For employees without a badge on hand, entering their Employee ID number works just as well.
Beyond the Kiosk: Automatic Check-In At the Door
Check-in doesn't just have to happen at the kiosk tablet. By connecting Guest directly with Verkada Access Control, visiting employees can check in simply by scanning their existing badge at a designated door reader.
When an employee arrives at a site outside their primary staffing location and badges into a door, that door unlock event automatically triggers a visit sign-in within Guest. This allows employees to move seamlessly into the building without stopping at a front desk, while security and operations teams instantly gain an accurate, real-time visit log of every non-primary employee on-site.
