A spaceport built for innovation — and rising security requirements

Spaceport America is the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport. Operated by the New Mexico Spaceport Authority, the FAA-licensed site spans 25 square miles in southern New Mexico and supports commercial, civil, and national security activity.

As tenant and mission partner requirements increased, Spaceport America needed a modern security platform that could improve visibility, accelerate investigations, and support more unified control across the site.

Modernizing security across remote launch and test areas

Spaceport America took a phased approach with Verkada, first replacing legacy cameras and expanding video coverage across key areas of the property. The rollout moved quickly: the team deployed 41 cameras in just six days, bringing new visibility online faster than expected.

With Verkada, security teams can remotely access live and historical footage from web or mobile, investigate incidents without immediately dispatching personnel, and use AI-powered search and alerts to identify relevant activity faster. PTZ cameras with Sentry Mode support wide-area monitoring across open desert terrain, helping reduce blind spots across launch areas, access points, and remote perimeters.

For launch and test areas located four to five miles from the Space Operations Center, that visibility is critical. Instead of driving out to validate every event, teams can quickly assess what happened, understand the context, and respond with more confidence.

Supporting high-requirement tenants with unified access control

Spaceport America is also expanding Verkada Access Control across the spaceport and corporate office. By consolidating from multiple access systems into one unified platform, the team can simplify credential management for employees, contractors, visiting personnel, and restricted areas.

The move also supports stronger accountability. With keycards and mobile credentials, clear audit trails, and integrated video context for door events, Spaceport America can better meet the expectations of aerospace, government, and mission partners operating in high-requirement environments.

As public sector and critical infrastructure organizations modernize physical security, Verkada’s broader investment in government-grade solutions — including GOVRAMP and FedRAMP® Moderate Authorization for Verkada Command in AWS GovCloud — reinforces its commitment to supporting secure, cloud-managed operations.

Faster investigations and greater confidence at scale

Although the deployment is still expanding, the impact is already clear. Security teams can monitor more of the property, investigate faster, and respond to events with better context.

AI-powered alerts help surface activity that matters, from intrusion and line-crossing events to unusual movement near gates and facilities. In the New Mexico desert, that also includes wildlife. Cattle, horses, rabbits, and even mountain lions regularly move near the property, and animal detection helps teams identify potential safety or operational issues earlier.

As Spaceport America continues to grow its role as The Gateway to Space®, Verkada provides a flexible foundation for scaling security, visibility, and control across one of the most unique operating environments in the world.
